Availability of kyber

Is there any precedent of whether the bar can provide kyber crystals or any technology containing kyber, like lightsabers?

As the rule is 'no living things' and the crystals are described es partially alive, I was wondering whether we have precedent, or whether we can agree on a common line on that question.

I am inclined to suggest small chips might be had, but nothing that would power a lightsaber or anything larger. The crystals are rare in canon and it's always shown they need a lot of effort to acquire. Granted that's in cases of the Jedi.

I still am very reluctant to allow them to show up as easily as asking Bar. I'll bow to the majority though.

I second this idea for them. They're such a major part of canon that easy access feels uncomfortable.

I second this opinion rather strongly. Chips too small to be of use, sure. But nothing with real application.

As you say, they are semi-alive, apparently. I think I'd come down on "no unrefined lyrium handed out by Bar" too, in Dragon Age, as it is rather a similar concept. Potions and stuff made out of it, refined, but not the raw materials--which is definitely analogous to kyber. (and no red lyrium oh god but that's different--although probably analogous to the red crystals for similar reasons!) And kyber never gets refined into anything but an untamed, semi-alive state.

This isn't like gold or sapphires or stuff--and even that kind of ought to have a fair exchange, or entire economies break. They are Extreme Plot devices, and also a highly limited resource. With the large-scale mining equipment of the Empire, these things are almost always Epic Quest related. I think the idea of going into the Labyrinth or maybe deep into the mountains, a series of Serious Trials, is actually pretty cool! I do think it would probably take a Force-sensitive to get, again in limited if useful size.

I'll be honest: I have to date operated under "Nope, not happening." Including as a large reason why dead!Anakin will not actually just ask Bar for a crystal or make a lightsaber, or why I am against him getting his current crystal cracked or destroyed as there is no reason to think he has a third in canon and he'd have to go get one at home.

As for tech containing them: definitely no lightsabers. That falls under "no lethal weapons" rule.

I'm just seeing this now, but for my two cents: I pretty much agree with those above. I'm uncomfortable letting it be so easy as just asking Bar. Quests for, etc. would make for great plot. I almost feel like it's something that needs to be earned in a way, as limited as it is in canon.

As for lightsabers, I'm also thinking no, as Lee pointed out they fall under weapon category.

I have given Galen only very small ones which he is going to try and use in an array, for a small proof-of-concept project. And there is another source of crystals opening up that can't be weaponised, so we should all be good.

Bwah. Welp, we already had Baze and Chirrut receive one from the bar in their first EP, but I understand the reasoning from everyone above. We can retcon it, I guess? But they're not going to actually construct a lightsaber or anything with it, just listen to its song once in a while.

You might say it's just too small to be traditionally weaponised, but big enough for a personality and singing? Galen has a few small crystals as well, no bigger than the little souvenir one Jyn wears in canon, but he's going to put them in an array together to work his little balcony irrigation system -- a civilian energy use miniature proof-of-concept for the intrinsic peacefulness of his work. A scientist's reaction to his science going catastrophically wrong or being catastrophically misused is making more science, after all.
